Making Excuses in my Dreams
I was awfully tired this morning. I didn’t really want to leap out of bed and pedal to the bus stop. I didn’t want to drive in either. The bed seemed like the right place to be. After the alarm went off I accidentally turned it off instead of pressing snooze.
Then, I dreamed that I had gotten up, gotten ready, and gone out to get my bike. I remember squeezing the tire to check to make sure there was air and finding the tire completely flat. I remember being filled with a wave of relief that I could go back to bed and sleep for another hour.
Then I woke up (20 minutes late).
I got out the door 5 minutes late. I was still tired. I felt like I was trying to pedal my bike with cephalopod legs. My muscles were making a tremendous effort to push the pedals and make the wheels turn but without the bones in my legs nothing was happening. This is the reason squid do not ride bicycles. Despite the apparent uselessness of my legs I did actually make it to the bus stop. It was not until after the bus arrived but luckily, it was before it had departed. I sprinted the last 2 blocks, leaped off my bike as though I was switching sections of a triathalon, flung my panniers and my helmet on to the sidewalk, and discovered that I was suffering from cephalopod arms as I tried to lift my bike on to the rack. (Perhaps my bike has gained weight.) I did get it into the rack with some struggle, located my bus fare the third time I checked my left jacket pocket, and finally collapsed into a seat gasping for air.

Oh my goodness what a time. I’m glad you didn’t miss the bus! That would really have made for a bad day.
