First Full Week of Bike Commuting

On Friday I completed my first full week of bike/bus commuting. It was lots of fun. I had a little trouble dragging myself out of bed at 5 a.m. the last few days of the week, but once I was on the road, I was glad to be there.

My car commute is 65 total miles each day. That is 325 miles each week.

According to Commute By Bike’s gas savings calculator, I’ve saved $8.21 each day that I’ve left my car at home. I have spent $2.50 on bus fare each day so I guess it’s really more like $5.71 a day. I’ve probably saved some wear & tear on my car too.

My daily bike commute is 13.9 miles. In total I biked 67.6 miles this week. It would have been more, but I only rode one way on Thursday. Brian picked me up from work that day so we could go visit his folks and eat Chinese food and lemon meringue pie.

It was weird getting in my car on Saturday to run some errands and realizing I hadn’t driven it in 5 days.

Ok… It’s not my first full week of bike commuting ever. I did it regularly for quite a while when I worked less than four miles from home. It is my first full week of multimodal (bike + bus) commuting over a bigger distance.

It’s actually a lot of fun once you get the hang of it… or get a system going. The easier you make it on yourself the more you’ll want to do it.
