Upcycled Plastic Bags
I just saw the coolest thing on the Craft Magazine podcast. The project was “How to make a messenger bag out of garbage bags.” I don’t really need a second messenger bag but lately I’ve been thinking that I really should get some reusable shopping bags. Every week when I go to the grocery store I think about buying a couple & then I think I should make my own instead. It would be so cool to make them out of “upcycled” plastic bags. Basically, they said you cut all the handles and whatnot until you have about 8 sheets of plastic bag material, stack them up between some pieces of wax paper and then iron them (somewhere between polyester & rayon) until they become one fused piece (kind of like tyvek). Then you can sew them together into whatever you want.
Then I found a site called MY Recycled Bags.com and found a bag crocheted from old vcr tape ribbon. That’s total craziness! My creativity has been put in it’s place. My creativity is not that creative at all.
And then… I saw the crocheted plastic bag from plarn (yarn made from plastic bags).
I’ve been reading A World Without Us and the chapter on plastics was kind of freaking me out.

My grandma made me a crocheted recycled-bag sling bag and it is the coolest thing ever! I use it for everything and have been thinking about doing it myself if I can ever get beyond a scarf…….

Yeah… admittedly I have a 1/4 crocheted scarf that looks pretty weird because I can’t seem to keep the same tension on the yarn for more than 15 stitches. A bag may be beyond my skill set. Also, I still can’t comprehend those crochet patterns.

I have come so close to buying those “crocheting for dummies” so many times but I’m just too offended…………

Maybe you can get someone you’re angry at to buy it for you as a present. Then you have someone to be offended at but you can still have the book.
Actually I think there are a bunch of online resources.
This one might be ok…

I really really stink at it but I think I don’t have the required attention span. I’m always thinking… “close enough.”
I wonder what it would be like to combine drinking & crochet.

Good thing those hooks are dull; I think a lot of bruising might occur with crochet/drinking!
Thanks for the site advice:)
